This Brings Back Memories

See the dress that I'm wearing in this photo...

...when I grew out of it in the mid-1960s, my grandmother made it into two aprons, both looking like this...

While visiting my parents for the Easter weekend, I happened to mention that I really should use aprons when I'm cooking, especially with tomato sauce. My mother then dug these out of the closet. I'm not exactly sure where the orange fabric came from, but it may also have been from one of my dresses. Judging by the way the ties on one of the aprons is made (see photo below), it was probably from some garment rather than a new piece of fabric off of a bolt. I wonder if my grandmother even re-purposed the rick-rack from my dress.

What a special keepsake and talented grandmother. Having the photo to go along with the story makes it even more special.

I never wear an apron but they seem to be making a comeback - I have seen apron patterns all over the place lately.

What a special memory! How wonderful that your Mother still had the apron. I use an apron when I cook. I find it is easier to wash the apron then to get the tomato sauce out of my favorite white shirt ;-)

Isn't it amazing how thrifty they were? How precious!

Someday (ha ha ha) I intend to have a number of fancy full length aprons hanging on a hook so that visitors can safely join in with the cooking, or my kids friends can get a cooking/baking lesson and get into the entire spirit of the kitchen.

Anya, this is a sweet picture and wonderful story!!! How great to have such treasures - the picture, apron and memories.

I also love the socks you scored at the AQS show.

What a great story! I would find it hard to use an apron like that, though. How about a selvage edge apron?

What a treasure you have, Anya! I would frame it with the picture in a shadow box.

Goodness! Even in those "days" orange was popular! I just had to comment on something orange! You knew that!

That's cool you have something your grandma made! I have a little apron of mine when I was small...my mom was a waitress at her parents restaurant and someone made her and my sister and me matching aprons out of dotted swiss.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if people still re-purposed like grandmother's did? The apron is a treasure.
