Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder

One of my goals this year is to use up fabric that I already have instead of buying new (boy, is that hard to do), so I've been making string blocks with scraps.

My scraps are organized into four categories -- fun scraps (novelty, kid-friendly, bright), solid or solid-ish, boring/ugly (country colors, Civil War, calico), and batiks.

The blocks you see in the photo are mostly made from my "boring/ugly" collection. Now remember, each one of us has a different definition of boring or ugly, so to some of you, these fabrics may be just fine. They just don't appeal to me on their own, but I don't mind them in scrappy quilts like the one these are destined for.

I think all the boring ugly fabric used in scrap quilts ends up looking beautiful because the pieces are small and mixed with white makes the colors pop.
I too plan on buying little this year and use what I have.

I think this ugly will make a beuitful one when done if you add the right sashing or boarder.Did you add these to a piece of muslim or just pieced with no back ?

It's amazing how the fabrics seem to change when you put them in different combinations. Will be looking forward to see what you do with them.

The really good news is that they all will keep someone warm and that is so great. I have some truely ugly fabric and I know one day I'll find something interesting to put them in....I just have not found that project yet...giggles.

I like them Anya! I must get busy with my string bins...as my granddaughter and I accumulate narrow strips we are tossing them into plastic tubs...oh I have plenty to get going with! Have a great weekend, stay warm!

You're absolutely right--each of us has a different definition of boring and ugly.
Your string blocks are anything but ugly. They're well on their way to being a pretty quilt.
