Have You Seen This?

I was hoping to have another DJ block to show today, but we had furnace issues to deal with yesterday .... so here is something else quilty to look at...perhaps you've seen it on other blogs. You can read a bit more about it here.
I also found this...be sure to check out all the pages on that site.

I want an Egg Chair (both of us celebrated our 50th birthday in 2008!)...but that's not going to happen unless it's a prize in a giveaway. I'm afraid a new furnace and a college education for my son come first...
Maybe I'll have a block to show tomorrow...

How'd She Do That?

For those who asked how I made the rotating picture cube on Monday's post...here's the link...

I just uploaded 6 of my photos and copied the HTML code into my post. It's amazing how these things work, isn't it?

Major Milestone

I spent yesterday at the monthly gathering of the DJ group from my guild and managed to finish my 100th block! As usual, a good (and productive) time was had by all.

This is "B-10, Jud's Trophy", an intermediate-level block that I paper-pieced and rotary cut.

According to the dearjane.com website, I'm at the "jubilee" level...
Silver--25
Gold--50
Diamond--75
Jubilee--100
Platinum --130
Wonder Workers --all 169 blocks completed
Miracle Workers --all block and all triangles completed
Goddess-- Dear Jane quilt finished.

Snow Day Sewing

The storm that brought the terrible icy mess to the central part of the country last Wednesday brought enough snow to this part of Pennsylvania to close schools and make the roads a mess. I had been planning to attend an open sewing session that my guild holds monthly, but I decided not to venture out. I understand that the building was open, but I'm not sure if any guild members showed up.

My plan for that day was to work on a charity project, so I decided to use the time to do it at home instead. I whipped out my serger and made 5 pillowcases which will eventually find their way to some children in need of comfort. All of the fabric came from my guild's donated stash.

I want to take a minute to thank all of you who read my blog and those who take the time to leave comments. I don't often answer in the comment section...I just send individual responses by email. And although I don't always answer all comments, be assured that I do read them all and appreciate you taking the time to write.

Liberation

In addition to being very educational, the process of making my DJ quilt has been very liberating. I'm afraid the quilt police would not approve of a lot of what I have done, but tough!

As I've bored my faithful blog readers before, you know that I do not like to do hand applique and have found as many ways as possible to avoid it in this project. If you click on the "applique" label on the sidebar to my blog (scroll down to see the label list), you will see all the posts that have had to do with applique in one way or another.

With this block, "C-11 Soldiers and Sailors Monument", a beginner-level block, I was at first going to use the raw-edge invisible machine-applique method that I've come to enjoy. However, when I sat down at my sewing machine with the broken needle threader, I really didn't want to try to thread the needle with the #$%^&* monofilament thread. I then had a light bulb moment -- my machine has fancy stitches for a reason -- they are supposed to be used (I paid for them, right?). They are also supposed to be seen.

So, the orange piece in this block was attached by using the raw-edge machine-buttonhole stitch applique method. The needle was already threaded with the yellow thread, so I didn't even have to change that.

Now I am free to use more of the fancy stitches in my quilt...
