Sorry for the non-quilting related post, but as my little bit of heaven gets slowly destroyed, I need to share this and this and this with others in the hopes that more people will become aware about what is going on, all in the pursuit of the almighty dollar.

I do know how upsetting this is. My sister's beautiful farm in Potter County will soon be invaded by the "frackers". When they bought their 130 acres, the gas rights had already been sold and there were a couple of inactive gas well heads on the property. They were not concerned. The wells were inoperative, mostly in the woods and so they bought the land. Now with the big boom in natural gas pursuit, their land will be decimated...and they have no recourse. For every fracking well they install, they destroy between 5 and 10 acres of land. The gas companies make all kinds of promises but there is no real assurance that their water source will not be destroyed. It is heartbreaking. In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, no environmental impact studies have been completed and the Commonwealth is not even taxing the gas prospectors or setting up a fund to protect the residents. It is an absolute outrage!
Wow, This is something I had never heard of before. We don't have natural gas here in our neighborhood. I am not sure that anyone would want to be in that situation. I can definitely understand your frustration and anger. Is there anything that can be done in your neighborhood?
Funny you write of this. On our little island a few years ago, and keep in mind we are in the middle of nowhere, 7 miles out on a lake, we were informed that there was talk of frackers buying up all the rights! What? We had never heard of such a thing....keep vigilant ladies!
I have a really tough time with this drilling and what it is doing to the environment. I think it is because the economy is so bad, that most everyone sees $$ and thinks it is an easy fix. It really worries me. A lot of unemployed in our area, have started working in various positions with the companies, and anyone I ask, they always refer to the good $$, even though they drive a distance for the jobs. At this point I am not dealing with it directly, but I have been reading in the newspaper and hearing on the news that it is being looked into around us...VERY SAD! Sorry Anya, I truly hear your sadness, and wish I could do more then just say, I am sorry!
So sorry. I'm from Athens tho now I live in State College .... I've heard horror stories about gas rights ... and ppl being evicted so that land lords can raise the rent to charge the drillers. :(
sucks.
