Now I remember why I bought a mid-arm quilting machine...
I decided to try a "quilt-as-you-go" method for this medium-sized project, and it's been a big pain to put together. The quilting on the individual blocks went just fine, but the sashing method that I chose leaves an awful lot of bulk in the seams, which means skipped stitches and very full sashing. It definitely would not work for a "cuddly" quilt. Not to my taste, but it will be OK to hang on the wall of my sewing studio.
Next time, I'll try one of the other methods that I found online...

I have never tried the quilt as you go method. This quilt is lovely. I love the big blocks and brilliant colors.
I made an Eleanor Burns Sunbonnet Sue quilt. The blocks WERE really easy to quilt...and I had no trouble with the sashing...I think it was a 'fold over' and hand sew on the back. Anyway, came out VERY nice. I am making another Quilt As You Go quilt, but it is machine embroidered and quite bulky. I'll use the same sashing technique on the back as I did for Sue! Love your blog!
I have tried some quilt as you go methods and I can say I am not overly fond of any particular one. I guess having a longarm really negates the need the quilt as you go. The same applies to you with a mid arm. Aren't you glad you have one?
Sorry to hear you're having such a problem with the QAYG. I'm a huge fan of the technique.
But I never really have the whole quilt going thru the machine - just when I'm attaching the last long sashing strip down the middle.
I always sew the sashing down by hand (like binding)- are you sewing it down by machine?
I use the "Awash with Colors" method, not the Sharon Pederson method. Both are similar but I think the first is sturdier. Plus, zigzagging the seams together seems to mash them down and cut down on the bulk.
It's great for attaching curved pieces, or even insetting blocks to a quilted background. A very versatile method.
Also, we've used it to do group quilts....it's way easier to put together blocks that are already quilted. When you're done, you're done!!
The colors of your quilt are beautiful.

Its still on my list to do a 'quilt as you go'. someday.
I do like the colors, and it will be pretty on your quilting studio wall, but it sounds like agony to be working on it! Good luck getting it completed and moving on to your next project! Have a good week, maybe no snow!!
I've been tempted to try a quilt-as-you-go, but maybe not after reading your post. Your guilt does look nice. I hope it finishes and makes a wonderful piece of wall art.
